Tatiana Huezo

Tatiana Huezo (San Salvador, El Salvador, 1972) is a director, photographer and editor. She graduated from the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica, Mexico City, and has a Master’s Degree in Creative Documentary from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona. She has taught at the Escuela de Cine y Audiovisual de la Comunidad de Madrid (ECAM) and the University of California, among others. With only four features under her belt, she has already won international acclaim for her documentary work and first foray into fiction.

She has won six Ariel Awards from the Academia Mexicana de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas and has been nominated twice for a Goya for Best Ibero-American Film. Her debut feature, El lugar más pequeño, competed at l'Alternativa 2011, before travelling to more than 80 festivals and making Huezo one of the best-known women making documentaries. Tempestad (2016) premiered at the Forum section at the Berlinale, played at l’Alternativa and was selected as the Mexican entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. Her first fiction feature, Noche de fuego (2021), was selected for the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes, where it won a Special Mention, as well as picking up two awards (Premio Horizontes and Premio RTVE - Otra Mirada) at San Sebastián. Her latest film, El Eco, won Best Documentary and Best Director Awards in the Encounters section at the 2023 Berlinale.

Tatiana Huezo was one of the project tutors for the 10th Mentoring Projects run by l’Alternativa Pro and will be at l’Alternativa 2023 in person to present the Catalan premiere of El Eco and to introduce the series of films we have programmed in conjunction with the Filmoteca de Catalunya.
