Synopsis
In an isolated village deep in the Mexican mountains, the girls are given boyish haircuts and often have to dash into underground hideouts to stay safe. Whenever possible, Ana and her two best friends sneak off to put on makeup in abandoned houses whose owners have fled. But while they are creating their own universes filled with magical joy, their mothers are teaching them how to escape the clutches of drug cartels out to abduct them. One day, however, one of the girls doesn’t make it to her hideout in time.
In her first foray into fiction, Tatiana Huezo continues to explore the same issues she exposed in her documentaries, adapting Jennifer Clement’s novel Prayers for the Stolen to offer a fresh take on the traumatic journey pathway to adulthood in a rural world beset by violence.
