El rostro de la medusa

Synopsis

Marina’s face suddenly changed. One day in her thirties her face ceased to be what it was. Who is she now? Through Marina’s story, Melisa Liebenthal uses her second feature film—and her first foray into fiction—to delve into playful research around the meaning of the face, emblem of our identity and nerve centre of how we connect with others, human or  otherwise. Can we be somebody beyond our face, beyond our image?

Biography and Films

Melisa Liebenthal (Buenos Aires, 1991) is a director, screenwriter and film editor. She studied at the Universidad del Cine , Argentina, and Le Fresnoy Studio National des Arts Contemporains, France, before specialising in essay film at the International School of Film and Television (EICTV) in Cuba.

She made her debut with the documentary Las lindas (2016), followed by the short films Constanza (2018) and Aquí y allá (2020), which have featured in festivals such as Rotterdam, Mar del Plata, Berlin, Turin and Seattle, among others. A Berlinale Talents participant in 2021, she uses her work to reflect on identity and our construction of images, blending various formats and genres. El rostro de la medusa is her first fiction feature film.
