Synopsis

In 1972 Djibril Diop Mambéty shot Touki Bouki: two young lovers dream of leaving Dakar for Paris but, when the moment comes, while she gets on board the boat, he is unable to leave his country behind. Forty years later, Mille soleils explores Touki Bouki’s personal and universal heritage. Its main character never left Dakar and Mati Diop wonders what became of his young love. Stories of families, exile and filmmaking pass from the private sphere to the stuff of legend.
