Satellites. Carla Simón

This year, three acclaimed Spanish filmmakers whose paths have often crossed with l’Alternativa have accepted our invitation to give a seminar and curate a programme of films of their own or by likeminded filmmakers who explore similar creative universes.

Carla Simón made a name for herself as a highly perceptive young filmmaker with her very first feature, particularly thanks to the way in which she worked with child actors in a complex setting. It comes as no surprise, then, that she has programmed two films that inspired her as she was working on her own project: Ponette (Jacques Doillon, 1996), in which a four-year-old girl has to come to terms with the death of her mother, a performance which won the young actress Best Actress Award at the Venice Film Festival; and Jouer Ponette (autour du film de Jacques Doillon) (Jeanne Crépeau, 2007), a film essay on Doillon’s film made entirely out of black-and-white archival footage and raw video-assist material. Carla Simón rounds off her programme with a series of her own shorts reflecting her development as a director from her early university projects.

Carla Simón (Barcelona, 1986) studied at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the University of California. She was awarded a scholarship to study an MA at the London Film School. Her debut feature, Estiu 1993 (2017), premiered at the Berlinale, where it won the Best First Film Award. Her shorts include Correspondencia (made with Dominga Sotomayor, 2020), Después también (2019) and Llacunes (2016). Her second feature, Alcarràs, is currently at the postproduction stage.

Carla Simón will also give a masterclass on working with actors during castings, rehearsals and shoots, as well as running the Inside Cinema activity as part of the Film Schools section.
