Y aquí estamos, un año más, empeñados en sacar adelante una nueva edición de l’Alternativa, contra viento y marea. Son ya muchos años remando a contracorriente, recortando lo irrecortable, así que no íbamos a dejar de luchar por defender aquello en lo que creemos así como así. Aunque nos cortemos un poco las alas, aunque tengamos que prescindir de partes de nosotros demasiado valiosas para seguir volando.
Porque son ya muchos años cuestionándonos continuamente y girando levemente el timón para responder a nuevos contextos, nuevas inquietudes, nuevas necesidades. Para seguir cubriendo un vacío, para seguir dando salida a autores que trabajan duro para ofrecer miradas personales, comprometidas con el trabajo creativo y con su entorno. Que, como el público de l’Alternativa, no se conforman con una visión reduccionista de la vida y quieren regalarnos esos matices, contradicciones y sensaciones que la enriquecen y nos permiten seguir cuestionándonos y emocionándonos, seguir creciendo como personas.
Porque creemos firmemente que la cultura no es un lujo. Porque nunca hemos necesitado ni querido alfombras rojas para compartir un espacio donde intercambiar visiones y emociones, formas diferentes de entender y representar el mundo. Un pequeño y cálido espacio desde donde mirar y pensar con libertad, donde sorprenderse, emocionarse e incluso incomodarse, para activarse. Un espacio de debate, de reflexiones compartidas, de formación, de encuentro. Para personas activas e inquietas. Porque defendemos la cultura como herramienta para el crecimiento personal y colectivo, no como fuego de artificio.
Y ahora, probablemente más que nunca, entendemos que este espacio es imprescindible. Porque más que nunca es necesario abrir los ojos y la mente, cuestionarse la aparentemente incuestionable visión economicista de la vida y ofrecer alternativas desde el poderoso recurso humano que es la cultura.
Porque la reflexión y la creación que permiten evolucionar no entienden de prisas ni de rentabilidad evaluada de forma numérica. Porque las ideas y creaciones interesantes suelen crecer alejadas de los grandes focos. Porque creemos que no podemos permitirnos el lujo de recortar la cultura tal y como la entendemos.

So here we are again bringing out a new edition of l’Alternativa, against the prevailing winds and tides. We’ve been rowing against the current for a good few years now though, chipping away at the bare bones, and we certainly weren’t going to give up fighting for what we believe in just like that – even if we do have to clip our wings, even if we do have to jettison valuable body parts to remain airborne.
Because we’ve spent many years incessantly questioning ourselves, nudging l’Alternativa’s tiller in response to new contexts, fresh interests, emerging needs. We’ve endeavoured to fill a void by providing a space for committed creators eager to share their personal vision of their world. Like l’Alternativa’s followers, these people refuse to settle for a reductionist vision of life and instead choose to enrich our lives with nuances, contradictions and feelings that open our eyes and help us question ourselves and grow as people.
Because we firmly believe that culture is not a luxury. Because we’ve never needed and never wanted red carpets to set up a space for sharing visions and emotions, different ways of understanding and representing the world. Ours is an inviting space where free-thinking, open-eyed people can lose themselves, surprise themselves or get excited or angry as their world suddenly expands. A space for debate, learning, shared ideas, meetings. A space for active, inquisitive people. We champion culture as a tool for personal and collective growth, not flashes and bangs for mere entertainment’s sake.
And now more than ever we firmly believe that this space is absolutely vital. Because now more than ever we need to open our eyes and minds and question the supposedly unquestionable economic vision of life. And in culture we have a powerful human resource for offering alternatives.
Because the creative thoughts and processes that let us evolve cannot be rushed or assessed in bare numerical terms. Because interesting ideas and creative sparks usually appear far from the spotlight. Because we firmly believe that the last thing we can do is allow ourselves the luxury of slashing what we understand as culture.
