Synopsis

Spain, 1992. The Barcelona Olympic Games, Seville Expo and the celebrations marking the Fifth Centenary of the Discovery of America: a country proudly presenting itself to the international community as a modern, developed and dynamic nation. Meanwhile, in Cartagena, the increasingly violent protests sparked by the economic crisis culminated in the burning of the regional parliament building. El año del descubrimiento revives this almost forgotten history in a bar in Cartagena. Neighbours, teenagers and the unemployed chat between cigarettes, drinks and snacks. They recall dreams, share stories and plan future projects. As the day goes by, riots can be heard nearby. The film creates a dialogue between contemporary Spain and the recent past using the experiences and opinions of ordinary people, drawing us into the past that has shaped the present.
