Synopsis
A film of exceptional sensitivity to questions of language and cultural identity, Met Dieric Bouts is a profound reflection on the conditions of artistic production in the context of the Flemish culture shared by the 15th-century painter Bouts, the filmmaker Delvaux and the screenwriter Michiels. Very much in the progressive Belgian tradition, Delvaux distanced the film from conventional forms by conceiving it as a metatext “with” rather than “on” Bouts. Remarkable in that it eschews any form of narrative logic or any attempt to totalise its subject, it is structured entirely out of a thematic association of various sounds and images.
