Native American Sebastián Mamani returns to his home village to dance until he dies, even though the Aymara community from which he was expelled years ago has condemned him to exile upon pain of death. During his time in the city, he had to face living alone, separated from his social group. Once he realises that his individual existence only makes sense when he lives with others, he tries to justify and reintegrate himself, even if this means dying for it. His past life and his expiatory decision express the idea that only those people and communities who recognise their deep-rooted identity are able to exist coherently and be themselves.
Winner of the Golden Shell at the 37th San Sebastián International Film Festival, 1989.
