SYNERGIES OF HISTORY. GRUPO UKAMAU

Synergies of History. Grupo Ukamauu

This year, we shall present a selection of four feature films produced by the Fundación Grupo Ukamau. Set up in the 1960s by the acclaimed Bolivian director Jorge Sanjinés, Ukamau has produced films that aim to reflect the reality of social and cultural life in Bolivia. These works have tracked the history of Bolivia since the short film Revolución first appeared in 1963.

Jorge Sanjinés makes committed films that constantly seek their own language and follow a style closely linked to Andean culture that tries to interpret the soul of Bolivian society through a profound collective vision.

In 1996, Ukamau won the Young Directors Award at Cannes; in 1992, to mark 100 years of film, UNESCO selected Yawar Mallku as one of the 100 best films produced from the 10 million films made worldwide in the last century. La Nación Clandestina was a hit at the San Sebastián International Film Festival and won the Golden Seashell in 1989.

Jorge Sanjinés (La Paz, 1937) studied philosophy at the University of La Paz and filmmaking at the University of Chile. He made his first feature film, Ukamau, with the support of the Bolivian Film Institute, of which he became director in 1965. He is one of the founders of Grupo Ukamau, which has been producing films for the last forty years that seek to play an active role in helping give a voice to impoverished sectors in Bolivian society and in parallel raise this society's awareness of the cultural values of the indigenous majorities.

In collaboration with the Casa Amèrica Catalunya and ICONES (Cultural Cooperation for Social Change).
