touki bouki

«Mambéty made only a handful of films in his short life, but each one is very special, and has its own unique energy.
Touki Bouki is something else, it’s a cinematic poem, made with a raw, wild energy…. ‘Touki Bouki was conceived at the time of a very violent crisis in my life‘ said Mambéty ‘I wanted to make a lot of things explode‘ and that’s just what he did! Touki Bouki explodes one image at a time» Martin Scorsese

Y otros elogios…

«This 1973 first feature by Senegalese director Djibril Diop Mambéty is one of the greatest of all African films and almost certainly the most experimental. Beautifully shot and strikingly conceived» (Jonathan Rosenbaum – Chicago Reader)

«Touki Bouki is a radical hybrid vision, patched together with a mix of haphazardness and fertile imagination, and a fascinating barometer of that time and place.» (The Dissolve)

In 2007 Martin Scorsese selected Touki Bouki to be a part of the World Cinema Project whose mission is to preserve and restore marginalized and infrequently screened films from regions generally ill equipped to preserve their own cinema history. Touki Bouki is one of the six films selected by Scorsese, a cinematic revelation, depicting a culture not often seen by outsiders on-screen.
