Other Bodies, Other Lives

Free Palestine!

Otherness can sometimes be something in close proximity that enables diversity to flourish; at others it can serve to accentuate differentness, opening up unbreachable divides between what we see as “us” and what we see as “them” — as unfamiliar and alien, something that does not belong. And once two sides find themselves separated by this abyss, cut off from all hope of encounter and empathy, they also find themselves able to commit the gravest of atrocities, driven on by dehumanising indifference.

The televised daily genocide on our screens, broadcast live in all its horror, leaves no room for humanity or the basic human rights we believed had been safeguarded after the appalling savageries of the last century. Faced with a sense of utter despair at the world, we can but shout out loud and clear: Free Palestine!

As part of this outcry to stop the genocide, to decolonise and to free Palestine, filmmakers from Gaza will be sharing their vision with us in a double programme at l’Alternativa Hall. The first part, Animated Palestine, is a programme of animated films from the West Bank, Gaza and the diaspora combining professional films with audiovisual pieces made at workshops held in occupied Palestine. The programme is organised by a collective of activists and artists from Palestine, Norway, Cantabria and other parts of Spain.

In the second part of the programme we shall be screening From Ground Zero, an initiative of The Masharawi Fund for Films and Filmmakers in Gaza, which works to develop and promote film production in Gaza.

Between the first and second parts of From Ground Zero, there will be a panel discussion with artist and curator Samira Badran, Nour Torelló (BDS, Queers for Palestine) and Alys Simpson (BDS).
