Cobre, by Nicolás Pereda (Mexico, Canada).

A subtle and sophisticated sociopolitical portrait rich in dramaturgical play and humour articulated through an approach to filmmaking that champions alternative production systems and community-based work.

The jury also awarded a Special Mention to

La Limace et l'Escargot, by Anne Benhaïem (France).

Imbued with genuine tender emotion and a tremendous sense of freedom, it invites us to imagine new ways of making films, deftly combining fiction and play while celebrating the popular spirit of cinema.

International Short Film Prize in l’Alternativa Official

The jury for International Short Films in l’Alternativa Official at the 32nd edition of l’Alternativa agreed unanimously to award the International Short Film Prize jointly to two highly original, free-spirited films with transformative structures created with few means.

An eloquently crafted a disappearance thriller rooted in the reality of a fishing village.

The jury also awarded a Special Mention to

Las Catas, by Adrian Garcia Gomez (United States).

From a personal wound, the director has crafted a film that uses original forms to move freely from popular culture to an irreverent profanation of film history.

Volver a casa tan tarde, by Celia Viada Caso (Spain).

It revisits an intriguing artistic personality and unearths memories of exile and subtly interlaces a fascinating archive with digital imagery.

The jury also awarded a Special Mention to the short film

Geometria bàsica de la muntanya del Montsianell, by Antoni Grañana (Spain).

A bold, refreshingly uninhibited film with an commonly wry sense of humour and playful spirit that contrast with its deeply felt core.

Deftly edited to create a distinctive rhythm that moves across styles, layers and stories to build a unique lyrical space and a portrait of rural life in the Alentejo.

The jury also awarded a Special Mention to the short film

A narrative about heartbreak women from multiple voices and moments of life captured through light.

DOCMA Feature Film Prize in l’Alternativa Official

The jury for the DOCMA Prize at the 32nd edition of l’Alternativa agreed unanimously to award the DOCMA Feature Film Prize in l’Alternativa Official to

Monikondee, by Lonnie van Brummelen, Siebren de Haan and Tolin Alexander (Netherlands, Surinam).

A revealing documentary shot in the territories of Indigenous peoples that addresses crucial issues such as extractivism, colonialism and capitalism, along with their devastating consequences for the planet and for these communities; as its title, meaning 'money land', suggests, the film denounces the impact of money on the destruction of community bonds and the erosion of humanity.

The jury also awarded a Special Mention to

Al oeste, en Zapata, de David Bim (Cuba, Spain).

An observational documentary that captures the relationship between human beings and nature. Its intimate approach connects us with characters from an isolated territory and enables us to empathise with their lives.

The jury for the Don Quixote Prize at the 32nd edition of l’Alternativa agreed unanimously to award the Don Quixote International Feature Film Prize in l’Alternativa Official to

L’Ancre, by Jen Debauche (Belgium).

An original portrayal of the human mind with its many hidden layers and the difficulty of finding inner calm which ably explores mental health through images that capture the mind’s labyrinths in a visually powerful way by combining image and music.

The jury also awarded a Special Mention to

Cobre, by Nicolás Pereda (Mexico, Canada).

Its complex screenplay captures and creates a mystery that leads us through a series of static shots where the tragedy unfolding on screen contrasts with the absurd world perceived by the viewer.
