Mauro Herce
Once again we are joined in orbit by a select group of Satellites, acclaimed Spanish filmmakers whose paths have often crossed with l’Alternativa and who splash down at the festival to give a talk or masterclass and curate a programme of films linked to their creative universe.
We are truly awed to welcome Mauro Herce (Barcelona, 1976) as one of this year’s Satellites. Herce has worked as a cinematographer and screenwriter on more than twenty films, including Mimosas, by Oliver Laxe; El mar nos mira de lejos and Aqueronte, by Manuel Muñoz Rivas; Slimane, by José Ángel Alayón; and Samsara, by Lois Patiño (all screened at past editions of l’Alternativa, as was his own short Lonely Rivers). Herce will be talking to journalist and filmmaker Samuel Alarcón, founder and original presenter of El cine que viene, a pioneering RNE radio programme that broke new ground in uncovering and promoting innovative Spanish filmmaking. Alarcón was last at l’Alternativa in 2018 to present his feature Oscuro y Lucientes. Herce will open up to Alarcón about his filmography, creative universe, influences and methodology, as well as his dual role as filmmaker and cinematographer. He has also chosen the films Highway, by Sergei Dvortsevoy, and L’Ordre, by Jean-Daniel Pollet, to compare and contrast with his feature Dead Slow Ahead, which is also being screened at l’Alternativa.
In addition to raising the profile of Spanish filmmakers crafting alternative visions to mainstream cinema through their own original ways of working, the Satellites section also provides unique opportunities for direct, creative exchange between filmgoers and filmmakers.
