Isaki Lacuesta
This year we are once again joined in orbit by a select group of Satellites, acclaimed Spanish filmmakers whose paths have often crossed with l’Alternativa and who splash down at the festival to give a talk or masterclass and curate a programme of films linked to their creative universe.
L’Alternativa opened its 25th edition with Entre dos aguas, by Isaki Lacuesta (Girona, 1975), and now we have invited him back as one of this year’s Satellites, a section in which like-minded filmmakers are given free rein to share their work and reveal connections with other filmmakers who have had an influence of their own work. Lacuesta will also share his creative process in a masterclass titled Story/Portrait, where he will discuss ways to escape traditional narratives, seek inspiration beyond conventional boundaries and embrace new forms of aesthetic and emotional experiences where the image melds with other arts. He has also chosen to screen Les Trois Couronnes du matelot, by Raoul Ruiz, alongside five of his films: Los pasos dobles, Los puntos cardinales, Microscopias, La matança del porc and Où en êtes-vous, Isaki Lacuesta ?
Isaki Lacuesta has directed eleven films, alternating between fiction and nonfiction, and has produced a similar number of video installations and other pieces that have been exhibited in art centres and festivals worldwide. His film Un año, una noche (2022) competed in the official section at the Berlinale and won a Goya for Best Adapted Screenplay. His latest work, Segundo premio (2024), codirected with Pol Rodríguez, has been chosen to represent Spain in the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars.
In addition to raising the profile of Spanish filmmakers crafting alternative visions to mainstream cinema through their own original ways of working, the Satellites section also provides unique opportunities for direct, creative exchange between filmgoers and filmmakers.
