Translations of the Landscape

Participatory Bodies

Onsite
A cameraless film workshop with Eduardo Filippi

In collaboration with Xcèntric we present a cameraless film workshop that emulates the practices of outdoor painting to explore our environment and then “translate” it into abstractions on analogue film.

The workshop begins with an introduction to experimental film, particularly cameraless film made by making additions to the material, starting with a commentated viewing of a series of works from the Xcèntric Archive. We will then prepare our devices, materials and tools and go outside. Using all kinds of paints, markers, felt-tip pens, brushes, inks and dyes, we will abstract the forms, geometries, colours and textures of the landscape and transfer them to film, which will be our blank canvas. Finally, we will head back inside to screen the results and share our reflections as a group.

Were I to paint the plein-air abstraction of this (as I do) onto a strip of film, my whim would be to absorb what could be seen . . . and then to allow into my consideration the movements of such absorption––the shifts of eye in contemplation, the electrical discharges of synaptic thought, the “translations”, as it were, from optic imprint to memorabilis.
