Los saldos

José Ramón Capdevila, the last of three generations of livestock farmers, learns that his son, Raúl, is coming home after failing to find work in the city. As they start working together again on the farm, they hear the news that a vast new slaughterhouse is going to be built in the local town.
In his directorial debut, Raúl Capdevila creates a lugubrious Western in which the cowboys are beleaguered by their own family. He is the son who returns home. His film, a living testament to the generations who worked this land, a loving letter of farewell to a vanishing age, replaced by new technologies and industrial progress in a society where everything seems to have an expiry date.

Raúl Capdevila Murillo studied audiovisual communication at the Universitat de Barcelona, before going on to do a postgraduate degree in audiovisual editing and a Master’s Degree in Creative Documentary at Universitat Pompeu Fabra. In 2017 he teamed up with Juan Carlos Carrano, Raúl Egüés and Alejandra Vera to make his first film, Judas. He helped edit Penélope (Eva Vila, 2017) and Las letras de Jordi (Maider Fernández Iriarte, 2019) and was the sole editor of the feature À procura da estrela (Carlos Martínez-Peñalver, 2022). Since 2019 he has been a member of the documentary project selection committee at the Huesca International Film Festival. Los saldos was selected for Mentoring Projects at l’Alternativa 2020 and won the Companhia das Culturas/ Fundação Pereira Monteiro Award at the fourth edition of Arché, the WIP section at Porto/Post/Doc Film Festival in Portugal.
