Introduction

Festival

We champion creative freedom and innovation with an aesthetic flair and an ethical streak

This year the Barcelona Independent Film Festival, l'Alternativa, reaches its 29th edition. For nearly three decades we've been offering filmgoers and professionals a unique opportunity to discover and enjoy screenings and activities that value creative freedom, diversity, innovation, commitment and thought-provoking reflection.

In 2022 we will once again be running a hybrid edition: onsite screenings and activities, a selection of films available on Filmin and a series of streamed activities for the public and industry professionals.

L'Alternativa has three competition sections in l'Alternativa Official [2021]: Spanish Films, International Feature Films and International Short Films. L'Alternativa Parallel [2021] presents tributes, premieres, little-known films, work by new directors and a programme of family screenings. And l'Alternativa Hall [2021] offers a rich, varied programme of free screenings, performances and debates in the CCCB Hall.

Spaces for meetings, reflection, learning, participation and celebration

Alongside the screenings, l'Alternativa Activities [2021] includes seminars, masterclasses, debates with creators, panel discussions, performances, creative workshops for children and grownups and Film School seminars. In addition, l'Alternativa Professionals [2021] will be holding the 13th Professional Symposium and the 10th Mentoring Projects.

Beyond the festival

We help keep the films selected for l’Alternativa alive and kicking throughout the year by arranging screenings at cultural centres, film clubs, museums and independent cinemas and by partnering with other festivals across Spain and further afield.

In addition, thanks to the close ties we have forged with Filmin since 2011, a wide selection of films screened at recent editions of the festival is available all year round to anyone in Spain.
