10 to 10.15 am. Presentation of the Pla_C* and Green Film Certification

By Laia Sanahuja, director of the ICEC Environmental Sustainability Plan, and Carlota Guerrero, head of the Catalunya Film Commission.

The Institut Català de les Empreses Culturals (ICEC) has recently drawn up the Pla_C* Cultura pel Clima, a sustainability plan with a 2022–2024 horizon that aims to encourage other organisations and companies in the cultural sector to take a proactive environmental stance and to set out their own roadmap for progress in this field. Within the same framework, the Catalunya Film Commission has published a Sustainable Filmmaking Guide, which includes a monitoring grid incorporating Green Film criteria. We shall give a brief introduction to both these initiatives and explain what the ICEC can do to help make film projects more sustainable.

10.15 to noon. Beyond Subsidised Ecology

How can we identify the greatest ecological impacts of an audiovisual production? What are the keys to successfully delivering a sustainability plan?

In recent months, government institutions and other entities have introduced environmental criteria in their production funding programmes, which require audiovisual professionals to incorporate a sustainability plan into their projects. Production teams will play a key role in successfully implementing environmental impact measurement systems and carrying out the required carbon footprint reduction plans.

Based on a sustainability diagnosis of the projects selected for this year’s Cinema Pendent call for projects, this activity aims to offer a practical introduction to designing sustainability plans, a key tool for introducing sustainable cinema criteria into film projects. By means of brief theoretical expositions and the practical application to real-life cases, we will analyse critical points, put forward specific measures and set out the major points in a managing plan. To this end, Green Film certification, created by the Trentino Film Commission and promoted by Cineregio (to which the Catalunya Film Commission belongs), will be used as the working methodological basis, since it is one of the most consolidated initiatives at European level.

Noon to 1 pm. Sustainable Logic

What are the implications of sustainability in filmmaking, beyond avoiding plastic bottles, reducing our use of motor vehicles and cutting down on waste in general? What is the perspective of independent film production professionals?

Sustainability issues in the audiovisual sector often focus on the environmental impact of the film shoot. However, screenwriting, development  and marketing stages may be equally important. In addition, we also need to consider the social, personal and economic dimension to sustainability, from perspective of film professionals and audiences alike.

This session will look at recent trends, frameworks and publications that have addressed sustainability in filmmaking from perspectives such as the circular economy or the triple bottom line.

By critically reviewing the options available, participants will be invited to reflect on the challenges and opportunities the ecological transition poses for independent film production.
