Finding the Right Teenagers: Casting for La maternal

Film Schools

Onsite

How do we go about casting natural actors? Where and how should we start looking? What happens in the case of when we need to cast teenagers and children?

Casting director Irene Roqué and casting team member Karmen López-Franco will talk about the casting process for Pilar Palomero’s film La maternal. We shall look at how to analyse a screenplay and characters, how to structure a casting process to suit a particular project, what selection criteria to set out and how to actually cast actors in a role.

We shall pay particular attention to casting children, which always requires consent and close involvement of their parents or tutors. We shall also see how schools are involved in the search for the right child actors for a part and the means available for sharing knowledge and experience.

We shall be joined by teenage actors Carla Quilez, who plays Carla, the starring role in La maternal, and Claudia Dalmau, who plays Carla’s friend Raki.

This dynamic participatory discussion will include some basic exercises used in casting processes for these kinds of projects.
