GES-2

Synopsis

In 2014 the V-A-C Foundation, owned by one of the richest Russian oligarchs in the world, acquired the GES-2 abandoned power plant in the centre of Moscow and tasked architect Renzo Piano with transforming it into a cultural institution. Over the next five years, director Nastia Korkia had unparalleled access to architects, project supervisors and construction workers as she fashioned an engaging, non-chronological group portrait with a strong streak of humour while the building was gradually infused with cultural energy for the masses.

Bio/Filmo

Nastia Korkia (Russia) is a Belgium-based filmmaker. She graduated in philosophy from the Moscow State University, before studying directing with Bakur Bakuradze at the Moscow School of New Cinema Moscú and documentary filmmaking with Werner Herzog in Cuba. Her shorts include Forget Everything, Dramatic and Mild (clips of which feature in GES-2) and Almost Spring. Estoy feliz, codirected with Mila Nekrasova, was her debut feature. Her work has been screened at festivals worldwide, including DOK Leipzig, True/False, Sheffield DocFest and Beat Film Festival, as well as at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. GES-2 premiered in Venice in 2021. She is currently working on her fiction debut.
