Emak Bakia baita

In 1926 Man Ray filmed the cinepoem Emak Bakia (Basque for “Leave me alone”) in a house of the same name near Biarritz. Nearly a century later, filmmaker Oskar Alegria set off in search of the house armed with only three cryptic photographs of the main door, two window columns and a stretch of the nearby coast.

Oskar Alegria (Pamplona, 1973) is a filmmaker and programmer. His debut feature film, Emak Bakia baita (2012), was screened at l'Alternativa and went on to win 17 prizes at international film festivals. In 2015 he invited filmmakers from all over the world to make a short film exploring the shadows and mysteries of the dark, which was released as The Darkness Collection and was also screened at l'Alternativa. He was artistic director of Punto de Vista between 2013 and 2016. In 2019 Zumiriki won a Special Mention here in the Don Quixote International Feature Film Prize. This year he will be at l'Alternativa in person, as one of the Satellites in our parallel section featuring films made or programmed by him, as well as giving a two-day seminar.
