Peter Greenaway's audiovisual triptych on Rembrandt’s The Night Watch comprises a fiction biography, an experimental on-site installation and this film essay on art, which uses every known discourse methodology from art history: from formalism to psychoanalysis, from sociology to iconology. He envisions a theory on the meaning of the painting very much in keeping with the recurring obsessions in his filmography and substantiates it with visual evidence in a masterclass that stretches the range of audiovisual possibilities to the full.
