Seminar: Art on Film. Film on Art

This seminar by Guillermo G. Peydró explores the different strategies filmmakers have employed over the last hundred years in their endeavour to capture art on film.

What began by simply filming artworks on display in museums and artists at work in their studios soon expanded to incorporate other filmmaking techniques and, in turn, to create specific, distinctive ways of translating art into the language of film.

Operations such as shot division and dissolve, weaving a narrative through camera movements, speeding up and slowing down and a range of other editing and lighting options have all been used by directors with very different stylistic approaches to create very different different impressions.

Here we will look at seven such approaches, culminating in the film essay on art. We will analyse each one in turn by looking at a wide range of clips of unique experiments that blazed a trail before undergoing a series of unexpected mutations. This exploratory seminar should not only be highly instructive for anyone working in film and art, but will also be of interest to students of art history keen to see the subject through an audiovisual lens. Ultimately, this is an invitation to look at art from a new perspective.

This seminar ties in with a series of films to be screened at l'Alternativa. The full programme for this series, which is organised by the Museo Reina Sofía , in collaboration with MACBA , and curated by Guillermo G. Peydró, will be announced shortly.
