Abderrahmane Sissako

  • Timbuktu (Abderrahmane Sissako)

“An extraordinary film and a formidable work of anger and compassion set against Mali’s bloody cultural struggle with Islamic militants, Timbuktu is a cri de cœur against violence and intolerance; but what makes it so unusually compelling as a protest film is that it’s also a richly poetic work of cinema: witty, beautiful and even—sobering though it is—highly entertaining.” —Jonathan Romney, The Guardian

Timbuktu is an act of resistance and revenge because it asserts the power of secularism not as an ideology but rather as a stubborn fact of life.” —A.O. Scott, The New York Times
