Nonfiction Feature Films

The jury for the Official Nonfiction Feature Film section at the 18th edition of the Barcelona Independent Film Festival, l'Alternativa, compuesto por Carles Guerra, Covadonga G. Lahera and Montse Romaní, made up of Carles Guerra, Covadonga G. Lahera and Montse Romaní, met on 17 November 2011 and agreed unanimously to award the Main Festival Prize to the feature film La dernière année (The Last Year) by Peter Hoffmann (France / Germany).

The jury valued Hoffmann's approach to making a documentary about a group of grape pickers in the town of Rasiguères in the French Pyrenees. As if it were merely another member of the group, Hoffmann's 16 mm camera effortlessly records the pickers' day-to-day life: their work, ties of friendship and free time. Shot over three years, La dernière année captures a way of life on the fringes of the system where a collective identity makes up an ephemeral community. By eschewing traditional representations of country work, the film dignifies and keeps alive a form of life that is gradually disappearing in the face of conditions dictated by current working practices.

Short Films

The jury for the Official Short Film section at the 18th edition of the Barcelona Independent Film Festival, l'Alternativa, made up of Pilar Cruz Ramón, Jordi Feixa Riu and Eulàlia Iglesias Huix, met on 17 November 2011 and agreed unanimously to award the Main Festival Prize jointly to the short films Il capo (The Chief) by Yuri Ancarani (Italy) for its harmonic choreography of human work, machines and nature, and its powerful reflection of these three elements' plastic qualities; and Wild Life by Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby (Canada) for its Darwinian take on westerns and its innovative interaction with documentary and animation.

The jury also agreed to award a Special Mention to Pandore by Virgil Vernier (France) in recognition of its compelling portrayal of the dynamics of power and social conventions and behaviour based on seemingly anecdotal material from field observation.
