Basilio Martín Patino is a key director off the commercial filmmaking circuit. Over the course of his long career he has evolved a mature, dialectic style that makes open, critical viewers an integral part of his work, as seen in Nueve cartas a Berta, Canciones para después de una Guerra, Queridísimos verdugos and Caudillo, which had to be made in secret.

His first film, Nueve cartas a Berta, won the Silver Shell at the San Sebastián Film Festival and all his subsequent work is tinged with memory and collective experience. Although each film is different, they all reveal the expressive ability of filmmaking that escapes conventional imagination. He employs unusual rhythms, mixes images and sounds from different, even opposing, semantic fields to stir up emotions and unleashing rich, unexpected subconscious experiences, feeling and signs.
