Fifty years after the Spanish Civil War, German filmmaker Hans is in Madrid to make a TV programme on the city and the war. Accompanied by editor Lucía and cameraman Goyo, he scours the modern-day city for images, exploring its spaces and people for links to the past. At the same time, as he looks through and edits archive footage, he questions the meaning and nature of his work (he doesn't see eye to eye with the producers) and ends up being replaced just as he was beginning to get into it: the price of taking the side of freedom.
