Sinopsis: For over half a century, the Basque Country has suffered a low-intensity civil war that has cost thousands of lives, the majority innocent victims: on one side there is Madrid and the supporters of Spanish national unity; on the other, an indomitable independence movement and Eta, the armed Basque separatist organisation. The European Union has so far avoided wading into this bloody clash for independence, preferring to deal with less diplomatically inconvenient issues. After a recent series of bombs, outrages and murders, Eta offered the Zapatero government an open-ended ceasefire to search for a peaceful solution to the conflict, raising hopes across Basque society.

Bio: Matteo Scanni (1970) is a journalist who lives and works in Milan, where he is assistant director at the Catholic University School of Journalism. He has written research papers on asbestos damage and disease, waste trafficking, industrial espionage and organised crime.
