Talk by Nicolás Pereda

Masterclasses

Onsite

Over the last two decades, Nicolás Pereda has built up a body of work that flows organically between fiction and nonfiction. Set in both rural and urban environments, his films explore subjects such as territorial disputes, the idle lives of the middle classes, oppressive working environments and violence and impunity. As well as addressing social, economic and political issues in a Mexican context, Pereda is also keen to experiment with new forms of filmmaking. In this activity, he will talk about his approach to the idea of representation, with particular focus on the use of repetition and variation in several of his films.

Nicolás Pereda (Mexico City, 1982), who holds an MFA in Film Directing from York University in Toronto, is a filmmaker who explores the intricate details of everyday life by weaving fractured, elliptical narratives through fiction and documentary. When casting, he often works with Lagartijas tiradas al sol theatre group and actor Teresita Sánchez. Since 2020 he has taught filmmaking classes at UC Berkeley. His films have been screened at festivals in cities across the world, including Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Locarno and Toronto. Over the years, l’Alternativa has screened almost all his work, from his debut feature, ¿Dónde están sus historias? (2007), to subsequent films such as Entrevista con la tierra (2008), Perpetuum Mobile (2009), Verano de Goliat, Los mejores temas (2012), Mi piel luminosa (2019), Fauna (2020), Querida Chantal (2021) and Flora (2022).

This year he is the subject of a parallel section.

He is also running a workshop on Epistolary Films.
