Geographies of Solitude, by Jacqueline Mills (Canada). 

A wonderfully surprising portrait rich in subtle poetry and potent aesthetics.

The jury also awarded Special Mentions to

Une vie comme une autre, by Faustine Cros (Belgium)

and to

Saint Omer, by Alice Diop (France).

International Short Film Prize in l’Alternativa Official

The jury for International Short Films in l’Alternativa Official at the 29th edition of the Barcelona Independent Film Festival, l’Alternativa, made up of Anna Giralt Gris, Angelica Tognetti and Antoni Pinent, met on 23 November 2022 and agreed unanimously to award the International Short Film Prize jointly to

Nazarbazi, by Maryam Tafakory (Iran, United Kingdom).

An intimate, critical and poetic vision of Iran’s past carefully crafted out of archive footage and blended with captivating sound.

And to

Urban Solutions, by Arne Hector, Vinícius Lopes, Luciana Mazeto and Minze Tummescheit (Germany).

An insightful, humanist take on crushing capitalist power told through a thoughtfully ambiguous narrative with dashes of subversive humour.

The jury also awarded a Special Mention to

To Pick a Flower, by Shireen Seno (Philippines).

A keen exploration of humans’ extractivist relationships with nature through photography, as a paradigm that reveals the commercialisation of images and the Philippines.

Spanish Film Prize in l’Alternativa Official

The jury for Spanish Films in l’Alternativa Official at the 29th edition of the Barcelona Independent Film Festival, l’Alternativa, made up of Ana Aitana Fernández, Marla Jacarilla and Toni Junyent Rosa, met on 24 November 2022 and agreed unanimously to award the Spanish Film Prize jointly to

Descartes, by Concha Barquero and Alejandro Alvarado (Spain),

And to

La visita y un jardín secreto, by Irene M. Borrego (Spain, Portugal).

Both films pack a powerful punch in questioning the prevailing account of democracy in present-day Spain and examine the enduring effects of censorship.

The jury also awarded a Special Mention to

A los libros y a las mujeres canto, de María Elorza (Spain).

A paean to literature as a source of inspiration for women and a means of passing on experience down the generations.

The jury also awarded a Special Mention to

Luminum, by Maximiliano Schonfeld (Argentina).

The captivating story of a mother and daughter bound together by their shared passion in extraterrestrial life and their search for life beyond the visible world. A perfectly structured documentary with daring leaps of faith that manages to transcend reality and transport us to another world.
