Camarera de piso

Synopsis

A woman seeks a job as a chambermaid under the cloud of family difficulties. Inspired by a project in which she was tasked with finding ways of expressing contemporary dance in the language of film, Lucrecia Martel sets the seamless movements of the body against the disjointed process of filmmaking while exploring themes of class divisions, gender-based violence and workplace pressures.

Bio/Filmo

Lucrecia Martel (Salta, Argentina, 1966) studied communication at the Escuela Nacional de Experimentación y Realización Cinematográfica in Buenos Aires and was soon directing her first shorts. She then worked on a series of TV documentaries before making her debut feature, La ciénaga (2002), which premiered at the Berlinale. Her following two films, La niña santa (2004) and La mujer sin cabeza (2008)—both coproduced by Almodovar's company El Deseo—were screened in the international competition at Cannes. We dedicated a retrospective to her at l’Alternativa 2015. Her latest feature to date, Zama, premiered at Venice before being screened at festivals worldwide. Her documentary short Terminal Norte (2021) follows singer and actor Julieta Laso.
Lucrecia Martel’s Camarera de piso is being screened together with Carla Simón’s latest short, Carta a mi madre para mi hijo, by way of an epilogue to the recent conversation between the two filmmakers at this year’s Biennial of Thought in Barcelona.
