Geographies of Solitude

Synopsis

An immersion into the rich ecosystem of Sable Island, guided by self-taught naturalist and environmentalist Zoe Lucas, the only human inhabitant on this remote sliver of land, which has been her home for over forty years. She leads us among wild horses, seals and bugs, through peaks, valleys, roots, sands, weathers, seasons and stars, as she goes about collecting, cleaning and documenting the marine litter that persistently washes up on the island shores.
Shot on 16 mm with natural light and field recordings from the natural world, and created using a scope of innovative ecofriendly filmmaking techniques, Jacquelyn Mills’s experimental documentary plays with textures to give a poetic hue to images that blur the line between art and science and invite us to reflect on our own relationship with nature.

Bio/Filmo

Jacquelyn Mills (Nova Scotia) graduated from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. After making the shorts For Wendy (2008) and Shorts (2013), she focused on her grandmother in the documentary In the Waves, which premiered at Visions du Réel in 2017 and won the Grand Jury Prize at the New Hampshire International Film Festival, Best Medium-Length Documentary at RIDM and Best Documentary and Best Edit at Atlantic International Film Festival. She has worked as editor, sound designer and cinematographer for several other directors and for the National Film Board of Canada.
