Las ciudades imposibles (Impossible Cities)

Between 1947 and 1949, photographer Bonifacio Hernández Gil took numerous photographs for the colonial administration and army in Spanish West Africa. His pictures show new cities emerging out of the desert like sets for science fiction films, empty but ready to welcome the new man designed by Franco’s regime: impossible cities.

Chus Domínguez (Léon, 1967) defines himself as a worker at the coalface of reality. His films have been shown worldwide at museums, art centres and festivals such as Locarno, Oberhausen, BAFICI and Vila do Conde. He also works closely with sound artist and performer Nilo Gallego, with whom he set up the site-specific action collective Orquestina de Pigmeos.
