Van Gogh

Maurice Pialat

  • Van Gogh (Maurice Pialat)

Synopsis

“Pialat’s characteristically harsh, anti-romantic and antisentimental treatment gives the film an undeniably tough edge, although accompanied by a surprising freshness and vitality. Eschewing the tableau vivant and waxwork-museum approach, Pialat has made a period film where the historical setting is indicated by little more than the costumes. Filming in the very landscapes painted by the Impressionists is enough to place us in the world of Renoir and Monet, without the slightest attempt to reproduce their or Van Gogh’s paintings. Likewise, there is no belabouring of the artist’s struggle to express himself: we don’t see what he is painting and in only one scene do we see actually him painting.” —José Luis Guarner
