20 Years of l'Alternativa

We present the history of l'Alternativa through 22 feature films selected from both official and parallel sections to give an idea of our rich, carefully crafted programmes and to show films that have played a key role in the evolution of the Festival in particular and independent filmmaking in general. It is only a taste, but we think it gives a flavour of what l'Alternativa stands for. It is also another chance to enjoy some truly unmissable films.

Over these 20 years we have been supported by several institutions whose backing has been vital for screening many of the films presented here. We are greatly indebted to the French Institute in Barcelona, Goethe-Institut Barcelona, Filmoteca de Catalunya, Casa Amèrica Catalunya and many other organisations who have always believed in us wholeheartedly.

We are holding the 20 Years of Alternatives roundtable at the Filmoteca de Catalunya, with critics, filmmakers, producers and programmers to explore and debate the evolution of independent filmmaking over the last 20 years.
