Pedro Costa

Pedro Costa (Lisbon, 1959) is seen as one of the leading lights of the new generation of Portuguese filmmakers. Heir to the great directors and the Novo Cinema group, he is a tireless innovator who expresses himself in the language of independent filmmaking. His basic tools are lightweight digital video cameras, and his work is characterised by a style that verges on mannerism with its different tones of black and white and recurring themes such as squalor and neglect, though with a certain tendency to sublimate them. In his style, critics see a return to the origins of film and regard him as the heir to silent films.

In the words of Esteve Riambau, director of the Filmoteca de Catalunya, Costa “can craft poetry from such ephemeral things as a beam of light, a fleeting shadow darting across the screen or simple sounds from exceptionally rich soundtracks”.
