New Perspectives on Receiving Images

Roundtable

Basilio Martín Patino (Salamanca, 1930) has always had a keen interest in creative processes that rethink filmmaking conventions, especially in terms of breaking the notion of linear time, as evidenced by his ever-present interest in editing and narrative games. His film essay Espejos en la niebla (2008) marks the culmination of a strategy begun years ago when the director started using exhibition spaces in his audiovisual work. This exhibit takes a critical look at the past through an installation of simultaneous projections in small semi-translucent boxes arranged kaleidoscopically by the artist to create a constellation of time and stories experienced in a different fashion by each visitor.

Aurora Fernández Polanco is a lecturer at the Department of Theory and History of Contemporary Art at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid.

The starting point for discussion will be a screening of Basilio Martín Patino’s latest audiovisual piece: the exhibit Espejos en la niebla (un ensayo audiovisual), Spain, Spanish, 67’, DVD, 2008.
