YOUNG MEXICAN CINEMA

Young Mexican Cinema. Tropico de cancer

In recent years, Mexico has been noted for its high-quality films made by young directors such as Carlos Reygadas, Amat Escalante and Eugenio Polgovsky.

Polgovsky himself has said "I celebrate the work of Reygadas and Escalante because they form a new generation which finds inspiration in the backgrounds of everyday people. Mexico is on the move; there's a lot of dissatisfaction and indifference; we need filmmakers to tackle these issues and see them through to their final consequences."

Their films have been acclaimed at international festivals by critics and the public alike and have won numerous awards. However, many of these fascinating films cannot be seen in Barcelona, through a lack of distribution. By programming these works, l'Alternativa both screens and promotes a dynamic form of cinema which would otherwise remain invisible.

Produced in collaboration with the Casa Amèrica Catalunya, the Mexican Consulate, IMCINE and the
CCC Film School in Mexico.
